MUMBAI – Shirish Chandra Murmu took over as deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India Thursday for a period of three years or until further orders, the central bank said in a release. He will head four departments, including the department of regulation.

 

He will also head the enforcement department, the department of government and bank accounts, and the department of communication. Murmu replaces M. Rajeshwar Rao, who served as deputy governor since October 2020. Following the change, Deputy Governor T. Rabi Sankar has been allotted the risk monitoring department, in addition to his other responsibilities. 

 

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet appointed Murmu, who was serving as RBI executive director, as deputy governor on Sept. 27. Murmu is a career central banker with over 33 years of vast and diverse experience. His areas of expertise include regulation and supervision of regulated entities and management of information technology infrastructure, the RBI said.

 

Murmu holds a master's degree in Life Sciences from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He is a certified association of the Indian Institute of Banking.  End
