--IMD: Monsoon may withdraw from parts of MP, UP, Maharashtra next 24 hours

MUMBAI – Conditions are favourable for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from entire Gujarat, some more parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of Maharashtra in the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department said. Currently, the line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon continues to pass through Veraval and Bharuch in Gujarat, Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, and Jhansi and Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, the department said.

The retreat of the southwest monsoon from the country has stalled since Sept. 24 owing to the presence of multiple weather systems, which kept up the spell of rainfall over most parts of India. The declaration of withdrawal depends on the fulfilment of certain criteria, which include the absence of rainfall over a region for at least a few consecutive days.

Light to moderate rainfall with spells of heavy rainfall are likely over parts of south India till Tuesday under the influence of several weather systems, the weather department said. A trough runs from south Odisha to Comorin, or Kanyakumari, while an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the southeast Arabian Sea adjoining north Kerala. Another upper air cyclonic circulation lies over Comorin and the adjoining areas, the department said.

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over south Bangladesh, which is likely to lead to light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and spells of heavy showers over parts of Odisha till Sunday, the weather bureau said. Another upper air cyclonic circulation over central Assam is expected to result in similar weather conditions over most parts of northeast India till Friday, the bureau said.  End
