--Minister Scindia: Not looking to increase stake in Vodafone Idea currently

--CONTEXT: Communication Minister Scindia briefing media at India Mobile Congress

NEW DELHI – The government is not looking to increase its stake in financially-struggling Vodafone Idea Ltd. in the near future, Minister of Communications Jyotirditya Scindia said at a press briefing at the India Mobile Congress Thursday. Earlier this year, Vodafone Idea had converted outstanding dues worth INR 369.5 billion into equity, thereby increasing the government's stake to nearly 49% from 22%.

Presently, Vodafone Idea is seeking relief from the Department of Telecommunications on the interest, penalties, and interest on penalties dues on its adjusted gross revenue liabilities. It has filed a petition seeking a repeal of the Telecom Department's additional adjusted gross revenue demand of INR 94.50 billion till 2018-19 (Apr-Mar). The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the company's plea next on Oct. 13. Vodafone Idea hasn't reported a profit for nearly a decade.

On allocation of satellite spectrum, Scindia said pricing is the "hanging point that the regulators will finalise". The government has handed out two licences and one letter of intent for satellite-based services so far.

Vodafone Idea had reported a consolidated net loss of INR 66.08 billion for the June quarter on revenues of INR 110.23 billion. At 1257 IST, shares of Vodafone Idea were marginally up at INR 9.06 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
