NEW DELHI – Tata Steel Ltd. Thursday said the production of crude steel at its Indian plants in the September quarter was 5.67 million tonnes, up 8% on quarter and 7% on year. This growth was driven by the normalisation of operations after the completion of the relining of a blast furnace at its Jamshedpur plant, it said in an exchange filing.

In Apr-Sept, the company's plants in India manufactured 10.90 million tonnes of crude steel, up 3% on year. These figures are provisional and include production at its standalone units and Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd. on a pro forma basis.

Deliveries from its Indian plants were of 5.56 million tonnes, up 20% from the June quarter and 7% higher compared with the year-ago quarter. These deliveries are before intercompany eliminations. Growth in deliveries was aided by improved production and stable demand across market segments despite the seasonal rains, the company said. In Apr-Sept, deliveries from its India operations grew 3% on year to 10.31 million tonnes of crude steel.

"Tata Steel UK is serving its customers via the downstream processing of purchased substrate. Deliveries for the quarter stood at 0.56 million tons," it said. Construction of the electric arc furnace project at Port Talbot in the UK commenced during the September quarter.

The company's Netherlands unit manufactured 1.67 million tonnes of liquid steel in the September quarter, a tad higher than the year-ago period. In Apr-Sept, liquid steel production from its Dutch plants grew marginally on year to 3.37 million tonnes. Deliveries from this plant grew nearly 3% on year to 1.54 million tonnes during the September quarter and just over 2% on year to 3.04 million tonnes in Apr-Sept.

Tata Steel earned a consolidated net profit of INR 20.78 billion on revenues of INR 531.78 billion during the June quarter. At 1207 IST, shares of the company traded 2.4% higher on the National Stock Exchange at INR 176.01 a piece.  End
