MUMBAI – India received 40.6 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 64% above the normal of 24.8 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. From Oct. 1–Oct. 8, the country received 45.2 millimetres of rainfall, 60% above the normal of 28.3 millimetres, the data showed.

Of the four homogeneous regions of the country, rainfall was above normal in three regions and below normal in one, according to the data. In northwest India, rainfall was a whopping 448% above the normal of 6.9 millimetres at 37.8 millimetres. This was mainly due to "large excess" rainfall recorded in all the nine sub-divisions of the region. Northwest India had been receiving heavy rains during the week caused by a western disturbance, which delayed the complete withdrawal of southwest monsoon from the region.

East and northeast India recorded 76.2 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 61% above the normal of 47.2 millimetres, as per the data. Central India received 34.3 millimetres of rainfall, 56% above the normal of 22.0 millimetres. In southern India, rainfall was 32% below the normal of 39.3 millimetres at 26.9 millimetres, the data showed.

Of the 36 sub-divisions in the country, rainfall for the week ended Wednesday was "large excess" in 17, "excess" in two, "normal" in four, "deficient" in six, and "large deficient" in seven, according to the data.  End
