MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has said conditions are favourable for further withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the remaining parts of Gujarat, some more parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, and some parts of Maharashtra, in the next 2–3 days. The normal date of withdrawal from Gujarat and most of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh is Oct. 5.
However, owing to the presence of multiple weather systems, which has kept up the wet spell over most of the country, the withdrawal has stalled since Sept. 26. The declaration of withdrawal depends on the fulfilment of certain criteria, which include the absence of rainfall over a region for at least a few consecutive days.
Currently, the line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon continues to pass through Veraval and Bharuch in Gujarat, Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, and Jhansi and Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, the department said.
An upper-air cyclonic circulation lies over the Comorin and its neighbourhood areas, which is likely to cause light to moderate rainfall coupled with a few spells of heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala till Sunday, the department said. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km per hour are likely over some parts of southern India in the next five days, the weather department said.
Under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation that lies over central Assam and its neighbourhood areas, few spells of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms are expected over parts of northeastern India till Friday. Light to moderate rainfall with a few of spells of heavy showers are expected over parts of eastern India till Saturday, due to an upper air cyclonic circulation over southern Bangladesh, the department said.
Due to an upper air cyclonic circulation over eastern Haryana and its neighbourhood areas, scattered rainfall is likely over Uttarakhand on Wednesday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds of 30–40 km per hour are also likely over Uttarakhand on Wednesday, the department said. End
