NEW DELHI – India needs to boost its domestic mobile parts manufacturing, including those of displays and sensors, as the world is already generating more data calling for increased checks against security and sovereignty, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Wednesday. India should increase manufacturing of chipsets and batteries, Modi said at the India Mobile Congress 2025.
Modi's call for higher domestic manufacturing of mobile parts comes in the wake of potential risks arising from imports of mobile parts, including the infiltration of malicious components, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and the risks associated with counterfeit parts. Malicious microchips or components can be embedded into circuit boards, providing a backdoor for remote access or data theft.
Data theft--which is a rising concern globally--should be addressed, Modi said. In this regard, India can emerge as a global data hub by developing its data centre and cloud infrastructure for storage. The world looks at India as a trusted partner, so Indian industry should look at the opportunity to emerge as a global data hub, he said. End
