MUMBAI – While the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Mumbai could be delayed by two days, it is likely to withdraw from the entire country around its normal date of Oct. 15, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. With the absence of any strong weather systems, drier weather is expected over the country, which is likely to facilitate the progress of the withdrawal, the weather agency said.
The declaration of withdrawal depends on the fulfilment of certain criteria, which include the absence of rainfall over a region for at least a few consecutive days.
The monsoon is likely to retreat from the remaining parts of Gujarat, the whole of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh between Friday and Saturday, the weather agency said. The normal date of withdrawal of the monsoon from Mumbai is Oct. 8. Following this, it is also likely to withdraw from most parts of Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and the adjoining parts of West Bengal, the agency said. It is likely to withdraw from northeast India only in its last leg around Oct. 15, when it will also withdraw from the remaining parts of the country, the agency said.
Currently, the cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea has weakened, the agency said. Though the remnants of the system are likely to move eastward, they are expected to remain at a safe distance from the coastline of Gujarat and Maharashtra. On the eastern side, a cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the north Bay of Bengal on Oct. 8. This weather system is likely to remain stationary over the region in the subsequent three to four days and ultimately fizzle out or, "at best, move northeast as a feeble circulation or trough," the agency said.
Though a wet spell is likely over parts of south Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana during Oct. 12–16, it is likely to be a precursor to the arrival of the northeast monsoon, the agency said.
Currently, the line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon continues to pass through Veraval and Bharuch in Gujarat, Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, and Jhansi and Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh. It has been on a pause for over 10 days due to the presence of active weather systems across the country, which is causing moderate to heavy rainfall over most regions, the agency said. End
