NPCI offshore arm signs MoU with NTT DATA to enable UPI payments in Japan

NEW DELHI – NPCI International Payments Ltd., international subsidiary of National Payments Corp. of India, has signed a memorandum of understanding with NTT DATA Japan Corp. to enable Unified Payments Interface transactions for Indian tourists visiting Japan, allowing seamless digital payments across Japanese merchants. "The MoU establishes the foundation to enable acceptance of Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India's leading real-time payment system for Indian tourists in Japan," NTT DATA said in a press release.

 

"NTT DATA and NIPL will jointly examine opportunities for UPI enablement in Japan to assess its potential for merchants and consumers," as per the release.

 

Commenting on the development, Ritesh Shukla, managing director and chief executive officer of NPCI International Payments, said the partnership is an important step to improve the digital payment experience for Indian travellers and simplify cross-border payments. "It also reflects our ambition to take UPI to more international markets and establish it as one of the most trusted digital payment systems globally," he said. 

 

Cross-border transactions on the Unified Payments Interface began in FY22 when Singapore linked its fast payment system, PayNow, with it. In the current fiscal till July, over 600,000 cross-border transactions took place using the Unified Payments Interface, with a total value of INR 1.69 billion.

 

In 2024, the finance ministry had said in a report that NPCI International Payments had reached out to more than 80 countries to link the Unified Payments Interface with their own fast payment systems. NPCI has also executed agreements with more than 20 payment partners covering over 30 countries, the ministry had said.

 

NTT DATA is a global technology and consulting powerhouse with an annual revenue of over $30 billion. The company operates in more than 50 countries and serves 75% of "Fortune Global 100" companies.  End
