MUMBAI – The headline indices extended gains for the fourth session in a row Tuesday. However, they gave up most of their intraday gains towards the close. This volatile movement in the indices was mainly due to the expiry of weekly Nifty 50 futures and options weekly contracts. Technical analysts said that as soon as the Nifty 50 closed above the critical level of 25000 points, the short-term trend turned positive. Some analysts said the current rally is narrow and only large-cap stocks saw buying interest from investors. Meanwhile, fast-moving consumer goods stocks were under selling pressure throughout the session.
Tuesday, the Nifty 50 closed at 25108.30 points, up 30.65 points or 0.1%. Gains in index heavyweights such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Reliance Industries helped the index close up. The 50-stock index has gained 2% over the past four sessions. Tuesday, the index had remained in a thin range for most part of the session, facing resistance at 25200 points. The BSE Sensex closed at 81926.75 points, up 136.63 points or 0.2%.
All the broader market indices closed higher Tuesday. The mid-cap indices gained more than the benchmarks and the small-cap indices. The Nifty Midcap 100 closed 0.5% higher. The Nifty Smallcap 250 closed 0.1% higher. The India Volatility Index, the market's fear gauge, closed lower at 10.0500. The index has been cooling for the past few sessions, with Monday being an exception, indicating easing of nervousness among investors.
Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Realty was the top gainer and closed 1.1% higher, rising for the second session. Anant Raj Ltd., Brigade Enterprises, and Lodha Developers gained 2.7-4.3%. The realty index was followed by the Nifty Oil & Gas and the Nifty Pharma, which closed 0.5% and 0.4% higher, respectively.
Shares of city gas distributors attracted investors within the oil and gas sector. Indraprastha Gas and Mahanagar Gas ended Tuesday's session up 5.8% and 2.4%, respectively. There have been changes in the tax implications on gas sourced from Gujarat, a CNBC report said, citing sources. The value-added tax is being revised to a 2% levy from 15?rlier, which has been effective since Wednesday, CNBC said. This move is expected to reduce the sourcing costs of Indraprastha Gas, as per the report.
Investors sold shares of large-cap FMCG companies such as Britannia Industries, Tata Consumer Products, and Hindustan Unilever, which closed 1-2% lower. Dabur India, in its quarterly business updates, said it expects consolidated revenue for the September quarter to grow in the mid single digit. It said revenue in the quarter was hit as consumers deferred purchases until the goods and services tax cut kicked in. The company added that 85% of its product portfolio now attracts 5% GST.
Telecommunication stocks were also in focus after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India released data for August late Monday. Indian telecom operators net added 3.52 million mobile users in August, up more than seven times from the 485,017 users added in July, as per the data. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea closed 1.4% and 8.4% higher, respectively. Bharti Airtel net added users while debt-ridden telecom major Vodafone Idea's subscriber loss narrowed. To note, Vodafone Idea hit a six-month intraday high after four large deals aggregating to 54 million shares took place.
Fabtech Technologies and Glottis made their debut to the exchanges Tuesday. Fabtech Technologies was listed at INR 192 on the NSE against the issue price of INR 191, but closed 4.5% lower. Shares of Glottis were listed at INR 84 on the NSE, a discount of 35% to the issue price, and closed at INR 83.70.
