NEW DELHI – The gross direct premium underwritten by non-life insurance companies rose 13.2% on year to INR 311.78 billion in September, according to data released by the General Insurance Council Tuesday. The premium income was INR 249.53 billion in August.
The New India Assurance Co. Ltd.--the largest non-life insurer by market share--reported a 3.5% on-year rise in gross direct premium to INR 32.52 billion in September. The public sector insurer's market share rose to 13.25% in September from 12.60% a year ago, but was lower than 13.91% in August.
Gross direct premium underwritten by Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Co. Ltd. increased 31.4% on year to INR 22.19 billion in September. ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co. Ltd. reported a premium income of INR 19.31 billion for last month, up 6.2% on year.
The total gross direct premium underwritten by general insurance companies was INR 234.31 billion in September, up 1.9% on year. The premium income of standalone health insurers rose 3.1% on year to INR 34.93 billion last month.
Among standalone health insurance companies, Aditya Birla Health Insurance Co. Ltd.'s gross direct premium underwritten rose 11.4% on year to INR 5.13 billion. Agriculture Insurance Co. of India Ltd., a specialised insurer, saw a 295% jump in premium income in September to INR 41.19 billion.
For Apr-Sept, the gross direct premium underwritten by non-life insurance companies rose 7.3% to INR 1.65 trillion, data showed.
