MUMBAI – The spread and intensity of rainfall over south India is likely to increase in the next five to six days under the influence of multiple weather systems, the India Meteorological Department said. Light to moderate rainfall with spells of heavy showers is expected over most parts of the region during the given period, the weather department said.
Currently, a trough runs from north coastal Odisha to east Telangana. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the Tamil Nadu coast, from which a trough runs to coastal Karnataka. These weather systems are also likely to cause thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km per hour over most parts of south India in the next five days, the department said.
Under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over south Bangladesh, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely over most parts of central India and some parts of east India till Wednesday. Another upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Jharkhand, which is expected to cause similar weather conditions over the rest of east India till Wednesday, the department said.
An upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam is likely to cause light to moderate rainfall with a few spells of heavy showers over many parts of northeast India from Wednesday to Friday, the weather bureau said.
In west India, light to moderate rainfall with a few spells of heavy rainfall is likely over Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra on Wednesday, the bureau said. Thunderstorms with lightning are expected over Maharashtra in the next four days, it said.
Currently, the line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon continues to pass through Veraval and Bharuch in Gujarat, Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, and Jhansi and Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, the department said. Conditions are favourable for the further withdrawal from the remaining parts of Gujarat and some parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra in next three to four days, it said. End
