MUMBAI – Global coffee prices rose over 9% on month to 324.62 cents per pound in September, as per the International Coffee Organization's composite indicator. During the month, the composite indicator fluctuated between 298.14 cents per pound and 360.74 cents per pound, with a median value of 323.44 cents per pound, the organisation said in a report.

Concerns regarding the long-term supply of coffee into the US due to uncertainties around tariffs amid depeleting stocks with the Intercontinental Exchange exerted pressure on the market. "However, on Sept. 8, the US administration issued an executive order changing the tariffs for 'aligned partners' that have established trade agreements with the US. This order recognises that certain goods cannot be sufficiently produced or sourced domestically, with the focus shifting towards items that 'cannot be grown, mined, or naturally produced' in the USA or which are not available in adequate quantities to satisfy domestic demand," according to the report. "Coffee, as one of the commodities that cannot be produced in the US on a large enough scale to meet domestic demand, has not yet seen its tariffs revised or revoked," the report said.

The price of Colombia Milds coffee increased over 10% to 403.77 cents per pound in September and that of Other Milds rose over 9% to 400.21 cents per pound compared to the previous month. Brazilian Naturals rose over 11% to 374.91 cents per pound and Robustas rose nearly 6% to 210.85 cents per pound. Prices at the London Intercontinental Commodity Exchange increased nearly 9% to 197.56 cents per pound and those in the New York ICE were up nearly 12% at 366.31 cents per pound in September, the report showed.

The arbitrage between the London and New York futures markets rose further by nearly 15% to 168.75 cents per pound in September, according to the report. The Colombian Milds-Other Milds differential rose to 3.56 cents per pound from 0.41 cents per pound in August.

Global green bean exports in August fell on year to 9.99 million bags (1 bag = 60 kg). This is the seventh month of negative growth in the current coffee year, with the volume of total bean exports down nearly 1% at 111.48 million bags in Oct-Aug from 111.22 million bags during the corresponding period last year.

Exports of Colombian Milds increased over 9% on year to 1.16 million bags, largely because exports from Colombia rose over 14% to 11.09 million bags in August from 950,000 bags a year ago. These were up over 14% in the first 11 months of coffee year (Oct-Sept).

Green bean exports of Brazilian Naturals fell nearly 19% to 2.81 million bags in August from 3.45 million bags a year ago. This is the third consecutive month in which exports of Brazilian Naturals have fallen below the 3.0 million-bag mark, and the sixth consecutive month of negative growth. Brazil was the main driver of the downturn, with its exports falling nearly 22% to 2.24 million bags in August from 2.86 million bags a year ago.

Green bean exports of Robustas rose over 9% to 4.0 million bags in August from 3.66 million bags in the corresponding period last year, mainly driven by growth in Vietnam. This is the fourth consecutive month of positive growth, following five straight months of contraction. Vietnam was the main driver of the latest positive growth, whose exports increased a whopping 175% to 1.59 million bags in August.

The share of Arabica to total green bean exports in Oct-Aug fell marginally to 63.2% from a year ago, the first time in 11 months of the coffee year. Exports of all forms of coffee globally as a whole fell nearly 4% to 11.33 million bags in August from 11.79 million bags a year ago.

All forms of coffee exports from South America fell over 14% to 4.94 million bags in August. Exports from Mexico and Central America fell over 12% on year to 1.03 million bags.

On the other hand, exports from Africa rose over 4% on year to 1.9 million bags and exports from Asia and Oceania rose nearly 15% to 3.48 million bags in August from 3.03 million bags a year ago.  End
