--CRISIL arm: Cost of non-vegetarian thali down 6% on yr at INR 56.0 in Sept

--CRISIL arm: Cost of vegetarian thali down 10% on year at INR 28.1 in Sept

MUMBAI – The cost of home-cooked vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis fell in September on an annual basis, CRISIL Intelligence said in a report. While the cost of a non-vegetarian thali was down around 6% on year at INR 56.0 in September, the price of of a vegetarian thali fell 10% to INR 28.1 during the month, largely due to lower prices of vegetables and pulses.

The drop in the price of home-cooked vegetarian thalis was due to a sharp decline in the prices of vegetables. Potato prices fell 31%, as cold-storage units discarded their old inventory while high supplies of tomatoes led to an 8% on-year fall in prices of the commodity. Onion prices fell 46% on year due to increased supplies of the crop. As per the report, domestic supplies of onion have increased as import momentum from Bangladesh remains bearish. Rabi crop supply in markets has also gone up, which has led to a decline in prices of onions.

Additionally, prices of pulses like yellow peas, chana, and urad fell due to higher imports, which also contributed to the fall in the price of home-cooked vegetarian thalis. Prices of pulses declined 16% on-year.

The decline in the price of a non-vegetarian thali was relatively lower, as broiler prices fell nearly 1% on year. Broiler prices remain important for the non-vegetarian thali as it accounts for 50% of the cost of the thali. Lower prices of vegetables and pulses supported the decline.

However, the decline in prices of both the thalis was limited as vegetable oil prices were up 21% on-year on back of heavy festival season demand. Additionally, prices of liquefied petroleum gas cylinders rose 6% on year, which also limited the fall.

On a monthly basis, the price of a vegetarian thali was down 3% in September, while that of a non-vegetarian thali rose 3%, according to the report. The decline in the price of vegetarian thalis can be attributed to an on-month fall in prices of vegetables. Prices of tomato fell 21% on month to INR 42 per kilogram in September due to higher arrivals from markets of western and southern India. "Tomato prices, meanwhile, are expected to firm up during the festive season, compounded by the isolated impact on yield from excessive rainfall in major producing states, such as Karnataka and Maharashtra," Pushan Sharma, director of CRISIL Intelligence, said in a note.

Prices of potato and onion also eased during the month, though potato prices fell at a relatively slower pace of 2% on month, while those of onion fell 3%. The price of a non-vegetarian thali increased as broiler prices rose nearly 10% on a monthly basis due to supply concerns amid low production, the report said.  End
