Mobile operators add 3.5 mln users in Aug, up over 7 times on month

MUMBAI – Indian telecom operators net added 3.52 million mobile users in August, up more than seven times from the 485,017 users added in July, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Monday. During the month, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., Bharti Airtel Ltd., and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. onboarded new users while Vodafone Idea Ltd. and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. lost subscribers. 

 

The net new additions were led by Reliance Jio Infocomm, which added 1.95 million users in August. This was significantly higher than the 482,954 users added by the company in July. Bharti Airtel added 496,087 users in August, tad higher than the 464,437 users added in July.

 

While BSNL expanded its subscriber base in August on a month-on-month basis, MTNL lost a few more. BSNL added 1.39 million users in August, compared to the 100,707 users it lost in July. MTNL's subscriber base decreased by 2,051 users in August. Debt-ridden telecom major Vodafone Idea's subscriber loss narrowed further to 308,984 from 359,199 lost in July. 

 

At the end of August, the total mobile subscribers in India stood at 1.17 billion. As of Aug. 31, private sector service providers Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea collectively held 92.1% market share of mobile users while state-owned BSNL and MTNL held 7.9%, the data showed. The market shares of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea were 41.08%, 33.59%, and 17.44%, respectively, as on Aug. 31.

 

During August, a total of 15.05 million subscribers submitted requests for mobile number portability, lower than the 15.41 million in July. The number of active wireless mobile subscribers in August 2025 was 1.086 billion, according to TRAI's peak visitor location register. The register is used to measure active subscribers, including those roaming on a mobile phone operator's network.
