NEW DELHI – The Election Commission of India Monday announced that Assembly elections in Bihar will be held in two phases. The first phase of the polls will take place on Nov. 6, while the second phase will be held on Nov. 11. Votes will be counted on Nov. 14.

The term of the 243-member Bihar Assembly ends on Nov. 16. With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has come into effect in Bihar, which prohibits announcement or launch of schemes and any financial grants till the results are declared.

According to the commission, there are 74.3 million registered voters in Bihar. Of this, there are over 39.2 million male voters and 35.0 million female voters. The commission said the state will have 90,712 polling stations.

The Bihar elections will see a direct contest between the ruling National Democratic Alliance led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the Mahagathbandhan of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Congress and other opposition parties. In the 2020 Assembly elections, the RJD emerged as the largest party with 75 seats followed by the Bharatiya Janata Party with 74 seats, JD(U) with 43 and Congress 19. At that time, Kumar-led JD(U) was part of the Mahagathbandhan. In January 2024, he left the Opposition alliance and joined the NDA once again, taking oath as the chief minister of Bihar with support from the BJP for a record ninth time.  End
