MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has said conditions are favourable for the further withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the remaining parts of Gujarat and parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra during the next 3–4 days. The line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon continues to pass through Veraval and Bharuch in Gujarat, Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, and Jhansi and Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, the department said.
The southwest monsoon usually begins withdrawing from the country around Sept. 17, and withdraws from the entire country around Oct. 15. This year the withdrawal process started on Sept. 14, three days ahead of the normal date.
The weather department has forecast a low risk of flash floods in the next 24 hours in a few districts of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The weather agency said surface runoff or inundation may occur at some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas in these regions due to expected rainfall occurrence in the next 24 hours.
The department also expects very heavy rainfall to continue in most parts of northwest India Monday. Under the influence of an intense western disturbance, very heavy rainfall is likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab Monday. Hailstorm activity is also likely over Uttarkhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan Monday. The weather department has issued an orange alert for these areas. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeding 115.6 millimetres and going up to 204.4 millimetres is expected in a 24-hour span.
An induced cyclonic circulation lies over west Rajasthan, feeding off the high moisture from the Arabian Sea. Also, an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over east Uttar Pradesh. Under the influence of these weather systems, widespread rainfall coupled with thunderstorms is likely over parts of northwest India till Tuesday, the department said.
An upper air cyclonic circulation, which lies over northeast Assam and its neighbourhood, is likely to cause heavy rainfall in some parts of Arunachal Pradesh Thursday and Friday. Under the influence of the same weather system, heavy rainfall is also expected over parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura in the next five days, the department said.
In southern India, a few spells of heavy rainfall are expected over Tamil Nadu till Friday. Parts of Kerala and Karnataka are also expected to receive heavy showers from Wednesday to Friday, the department said. End
