HYDERABAD - Public sector defence manufacturing major Bharat Dynamics Ltd. has requested the Andhra Pradesh government to allot 1,400 acres at Donakonda in the state's Prakasam district to set up a missile manufacturing and testing facility, a source in the state government told Informist. The company has proposed an investment of INR 12 billion to set up the facility, the source added.

The company has submitted its draft project report for the unit to the Andhra Pradesh government, which may consider it in the next cabinet meeting, the source said. Bharat Dynamics already has a manufacturing facility near Visakhapatnam. The company's core research and development along with manufacturing operations are concentrated in Hyderabad, Bhanur, and Ibrahimpatnam in Telangana. Bharat Dynamics is also developing manufacturing units in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The source mentioned above said a delegation of senior officials from Bharat Dynamics has visited the Donakonda area to identify a suitable location for the proposed unit. The company is planning to manufacture integrated weapons systems and communication equipment used in missiles from this facility, the source said. Bharat Dynamics has also proposed making specialty motors used in rockets, which may be deployed in space programs as well. The company has offered direct jobs to 600 and indirect employment to over 1,000 people in the area.

The Andhra Pradesh government has been promoting Prakasam and Anantapur districts as defence manufacturing hubs. It has already allotted land for Bharat Dynamics' subsidiary Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd., which is building a defence manufacturing unit with an investment of INR 24 billion. The state government also recently allotted 1,000 acres to HFCL Ltd. for setting up an artillery ammunition shells unit.

On Monday, shares of Bharat Dynamics ended at INR 1,558.30 on the National Stock Exchange, down 0.2% from its previous close.  End
