NEW DELHI – After the overhaul of the goods and services tax regime, the government can announce more reforms by Diwali, NITI Aayog Chief Executive Officer B.V.R. Subrahmanyam said Monday. "I think very deep work is going on," the NITI Aayog CEO said. "You can see the noises in various parts of the government. I think you will hear more stuff before Diwali. GST is done, there could be other stuff coming," Subrahmanyam said.
The work on the next set of reforms is already on, and the committees set up by the government on deregulation and the developed economy goal, both chaired by NITI Aayog Member Rajiv Gauba, have submitted their first reports at the end of September, Subrahmanyam said at a press conference.
The panel on deregulation has suggested reforms for 13 to 14 sectors, including priority areas such as trade, and micro, small, and medium enterprises, a government official part of the committee said on the condition of anonymity.
The official said that the committees will continue giving suggestions to the government through monthly reports.
The government proposed reforms to the GST, which were approved by the GST Council in September, and set up several committees to find ways to support the economy after the US imposed 50% tariff on imports from India. The Economic Survey for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), released earlier this year, had said that India needs to focus on deregulation to improve its global competitiveness and support medium term growth potential.
