Heavy rain in most parts of India boosts reservoir water levels by 1% on wk

MUMBAI – The water level in 161 reservoirs across the country was 164.986 billion cubic metres as on Thursday, up 1% from 163.34 billion cubic metres a week ago, according to data from the Central Water Commission. This week-on-week rise in water levels in key reservoirs is mainly due to an increase in water levels in reservoirs in south, west, and central India, supported by continued heavy rainfall during the week.

 

The current level is 90.4% of the total live storage capacity of 182.48 billion cubic metres and is up 3.5% on year. The water level in the reservoirs as of Thursday was 15% higher than the 10-year average. 

 

The highest week-on-week rise in water levels was seen in the reservoirs in southern India. The water level in reservoirs in the southern region was at 48.562 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, up from 47.51 billion cubic metres the previous week. The water level as of Thursday was 88.4% of the total live storage capacity across the 45 reservoirs in the region. This region includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. The water level in the corresponding period last year was 85.4% of the total live storage capacity. Telangana, coastal Karnataka, north interior Karnataka, and Kerala have received "excess" to "large excess" showers during the week ended Wednesday and the region as a whole recorded 18?ove-normal showers at 46.8 millimetres in the same time period.    

 

Reservoirs in the west and central India also recorded a week-on-week increase in water levels. In west, resrvoirs held 36.351 billion cubic metres, up from 35.86 billion cubic metres the previous week. The water level as on Thursday was 97.3% of the total live storage capacity, slightly higher than 97% a year ago. The western region comprises Goa, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Goa, Maharashtra, Saurashtra, and Kutch recorded "large excess" showers during the week, while Gujarat region recorded "excess" showers.  

 

The water level in reservoirs in the central region was 45.063 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, up from 44.74 billion cubic metres seen last week. It accounts for over nearly 93% of the total live storage capacity, surpassing 83% from a year ago. This region includes Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. These states also recorded above-normal showers during the week. 


While states in eastern region recorded below-normal showers during the week, the water level in key reservoirs in the region was 17.122 billion cubic metres, slightly higher than 16.98 billion cubic metres seen on Sept. 25. The current water level is nearly 79% of the total live storage capacity, compared with over 85% a year ago. The eastern region includes Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Tripura, and West Bengal. 

 

Reservoirs in the northern region held 17.889 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, lower than 18.25 billion cubic metres the previous week. The current level is over 90% of the total live storage capacity, and higher than 81% in the corresponding period last year. The northern region includes Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan.

 

Out of the 161 reservoirs, 154 reservoirs reported more than 80% of normal storage, and seven reported 80% or below of the normal storage. During Jun. 1 to Sept. 30, India received 937.2 millimetres of rainfall, 8?ove the normal of 868.6 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
