NEW DELHI – Ola Electric Mobility Ltd. Monday said it has received a certification from the Global Automotive Research Centre in Tamil Nadu for its rare earth magnet-free ferrite motor, becoming the first automotive original equipment manufacturer in India to get the approval. "Ola Electric's ferrite motor underwent rigorous performance verification and mandatory motor power tests as per AIS 041 that is notified by the Ministry of Road Transport, Government of India," the company said in an exchange filing.

Rare earth magnets are key input materials for automobiles, especially those fuelled by electricity. Automotive companies came under pressure earlier this year when China, the largest supplier of rare earth magnets in the world, curbed its exports. Companies were forced to change their production plans, and in many cases, cut back, as a result of these curbs.

"The tests showed that Ola Electric's in-house developed ferrite motor's performance matched that of the motors with rare-earth permanent magnet motors in terms of net power for 7kW and 11 kW variants," the company said. The Bhavish Agarwal-run automotive startup said this motor can deliver efficiency, performance, and durability on par with rare-earth permanent magnet motors. Ola Electric had mentioned this technology at its event in August.

"With this certification, Ola Electric will begin integrating the ferrite motor across its product lineup, further enhancing performance, affordability, and sustainability for millions of Indian consumers," the company said.

For the June quarter, Ola Electric Mobility reported a consolidated net loss of INR 4.28 billion on revenue of INR 8.28 billion. At 1200 IST, shares of the company traded at INR 53.38, down 1.1%.  End
