MUMBAI – Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Sunday under the influence of multiple weather systems, the India Meteorological Department said while issuing a red alert. The weather department has also issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Bihar on Sunday. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

A well-marked low pressure area currently lies over Jharkhand and the adjoining areas of south Bihar, southeast Uttar Pradesh, and north Chhattisgarh. A cyclonic circulation associated with the weather systems also lies over the same area. Additionally, a trough runs from northeast Bihar to east Vidarbha, across the cyclonic circulation, the department said. These weather systems are also likely to cause heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds over most parts of east India in the next four to five days, the department said.

Under the influence of a western disturbance, extremely heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, the department said. A fresh western disturbance is expected to form in the later hours of Saturday, which is likely to cause very heavy rainfall over most parts of northwest India on Monday, the department said.

The fresh western disturbance is expected to interact with other weather systems, feeding off the high moisture in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. This is likely to cause hailstorms over parts of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab on Sunday and Monday, and over Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan on Monday, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall or snowfall is expected over parts of Uttarakhand on Monday and Tuesday, the bureau said.

Light to moderate rainfall with a few spells of heavy rainfall are likely over parts of south India till Monday, the bureau said. Moderate to heavy spells of rainfall are expected over most parts of northeast India till Friday, the bureau said.

In west India, light to moderate showers with a few spells of heavy rainfall are expected over most parts on Wednesday and Thursday, the bureau said. The deep depression, which had formed over the northeast Arabian Sea on Friday, intensified into a cyclonic storm "Shakhti" on the same day, it said. It intensified further into a severe cyclonic storm in the early hours of Saturday. Currently, it lies over the northeast Arabian Sea, 470 km west of Dwarka in Gujarat. It is likely to reach west central Arabian Sea on Sunday and weaken gradually. As such, it is unlikely to cause any major weather phenomenon over the western parts of the country.

The line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon continues to pass through Veraval and Bharuch in Gujarat, Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, and Jhansi and Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, the department said.  End
