MUMBAI – The FAO All Rice Price Index averaged 100.9 points in September, down 0.5% from August and 24.2% from a year ago, according to data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. The index declined mainly because of a 0.9?ll in Indica prices from their August level, according to the report.

Japonica rice indices also fell nearly 3% to 90.5 points in September due to a fall in prices in Vietnam, where demand for freshly harvested supplies remained confined to local markets. However, the Aromatic and Glutinous rice indices rose 1.1% and 1.9%, respectively. The increases were underpinned by seasonal tightness, which was exacerbated in Thailand by the appreciation of the baht against the dollar. Prices rose in Pakistan on concern over the impact of floods on Punjab's basmati crop.

India Pusa Basmati variety remained unchanged at $925.0 in September from the previous month. The average price of 25% broken non-basmati rice exported from India fell to $358.1 per tonne in September from $361.2 per tonne in August and that of 5% broken non-basmati rice fell to $374.7 per tonne from $377.0 per tonne, as per the report. The price of 5% parboiled rice from India fell to $353.0 a tonne from $368.0 per tonne in August. "In India, declines came in tandem with the rupee's depreciation against the United States dollar, although a slowdown in purchases by Western African buyers exerted additional downward pressure on parboiled quotations," according to the report.

The price of Thailand's A1 Super rice variety rose to $341.0 a tonne in September from $324.8 per tonne in August while that of Thailand's 25% broken variety rose to $366.7 per tonne from $366.0 per tonne. The price of Vietnam's 25% broken rice fell to $351.6 a tonne in September from $364.3 per tonne in August. Pakistan's 5% broken rice rose to $362.5 a tonne from $361.3 in August while basmati rice rose to $1,089.1 per tonne in September from $1,064.6 per tonne in August. "Prices moved little in Pakistan, as early month concerns that floods could affect crops in IRRI-producing Sindh eventually eased, while buying interest remained weak."  End
