EIA says US crude oil stocks up 1.8 mln bbl in week to Sept 26, exports down

MUMBAI – Crude oil inventories in the US, excluding those in strategic petroleum reserves, rose by 1.8 million barrels to 416.5 million barrels in the week ended Sept. 26, the US Energy Information Administration said in its weekly report. Analysts polled by Dow Jones had expected the stocks to rise 300,000 barrels from the previous week. US crude oil inventories were about 4% below the five-year average for this time of the year, the report said.
Petrol inventories rose by 4.1 million barrels from the previous week to 220.7 million barrels in the week ended Sept. 26 while analysts polled by Dow Jones had not expected any change in inventories. Petrol stocks were at the same level as the five-year average for this time of the year, the report said. Distillate fuel stocks rose by 600,000 barrels to 123.6 million barrels in the week ended Sept. 26, as against a 800,000-barrel fall expected in the Dow Jones poll. The distillate fuel stocks were around 6% below the five-year average for this time of the year.
According to the report, refinery utilisation fell to 91.4% from 93.0% the previous week. Crude oil production in the US, the largest producer of the commodity, rose 4,000 barrels per day to 13.51 million barrels per day in the week ended Sept. 26.
At 1258 IST, the most-active November contract of West Texas Intermediate crude oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange was 1.1% higher at $61.14 per barrel.
US crude oil imports averaged 5.8 million barrels per day in the week ended Sept. 26, down 662,000 barrels per day from the previous week. Over the past four weeks, US crude oil imports have averaged around 6.1 million barrels a day, around 8% lower than the corresponding period last year.
Of the top 10 countries that export crude oil to the US, imports from seven fell during the week. Imports from Brazil fell the most, by 295,000 barrels per day to 140,000 barrels per day. Imports from Ecuador fell by 236,000 barrels per day to nil. On the other hand, crude oil imports from Canada rose the most, by 263,000 barrels per day to 4.1 million barrels per day.
For the week ended Sept. 26, crude oil exports by the US fell 733,000 barrels per day to 3.8 million barrels per day. Strategic petroleum reserves rose by 700,000 barrels to 406.7 million barrels during the week.
Inventories of crude oil at Cushing in Oklahoma, a key delivery point for West Texas Intermediate crude, fell by 300,000 barrels to 23.5 million barrels in the week ended Sept. 26. Cushing is the designated delivery point for NYMEX crude oil futures contracts. Market participants closely monitor stockpiles at Cushing, as it has a storage capacity of about 90 million barrels.
