AHMEDABAD - Ashok Leyland Ltd. sold total 18,813 vehicles to dealerships in India and abroad in September, up over 9% on year, it said in an exchange filing Wednesday. Sales of light commercial vehicles clocked double-digit growth, even as truck despatches remained muted. Ashok Leyland sold 17,209 commercial vehicles in India last month, up just over 7%.
Total sales of medium to heavy tonnage commercial vehicles grew over 7% on year to 11,808 units. Of this, domestic sales accounted for 10,499 units, up 3%.
Total sales of medium to heavy tonnage trucks rose slightly to 9,208 units in September. Of this, domestic sales stood at 8,862 units. Total bus sales grew 7% on year in September to 2,600 units. Domestic bus sales shrunk by 9% to 1,637 units.
Total despatches of light commercial vehicles, which form around 37.2% of Ashok Leyland's overall automobile sales, grew 14% to 7,005 units in September. Light commercial vehicle sales in India grew 15% year-on-year to 6,710 units last month.
The company despatched 93,354 commercial vehicles to dealerships in India and abroad in Apr-Sept, up 4% on year. In India, the company sold 85,559 units in Apr-Sept, up 2% from the year-ago period. Ashok Leyland sold a total of 58,789 commercial vehicles of medium-heavy tonnage in Apr-Sept, up 5% on year. In the same period, it sold total 34,565 light commercial vehicles, about 3% higher than a year ago.
Ashok Leyland reported a net profit of INR 5.94 billion for the June quarter, on revenues of INR 87.25 billion. On Wednesday, shares of the company closed 1% lower at INR 141.23 on the National Stock Exchange. End
