NEW DELHI – Tata Motors Ltd. reported double-digit growth in wholesale sales of commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles in September, buoyed by the new and reduced goods and services tax rates and a festival season boost. Last month, the company's passenger vehicle sales grew year-on-year for the first time in the last six months and sales of commercial vehicles rose at the fastest rate year-on-year in the last three months.
Including electric vehicles, the Safari-maker sold 60,907 passenger vehicles to dealerships in September, up 47% on year and 52% on month. This is the highest number of passenger vehicles sold by Tata Motors ever in a month.
"The passenger vehicles industry marked a sharp upswing in demand during September 2025 following the rollout of GST 2.0, further buoyed by festive tailwinds," said Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd.'s Managing Director Shailesh Chandra. "This surge in demand sets a promising tone for sustained growth in the months ahead," he added.
Sales of Tata Motors' passenger vehicles in India grew 45% on year and 51% on month to 59,667 units. Exports of passenger vehicles grew manifold to 1,240 units in September from 250 units in the same month a year ago. "Going forward, with a strong booking pipeline, agile supply readiness, and rising demand driven by festive cheer and accessible pricing, we are well-positioned to carry this growth momentum in H2 FY26," Chandra said.
In the September quarter, Tata Motors sold 144,397 passenger vehicles in India and abroad, up 10% from the year-ago quarter. Sales in the India market grew 8% on year to 140,189 units in the latest quarter and exports were up at 4,208 units from 823 units in the year-ago quarter. "Our strategic foray into South Africa marked a significant milestone in our global expansion journey, with 5x export volumes compared to the previous year, highlighting the strength of our brand and product appeal in international markets," Chandra said.
Electric vehicle sales grew 59% on year to 24,855 units in the September quarter, contributing a record high of 17% to the Nexon-maker's overall portfolio. Sales of Tata Motors' compressed natural gas-run cars hit a record high of over 17,800 units in September, doubling year-on-year in the latest quarter.
CV BUSINESS
Tata Motors sold 35,862 commercial vehicles in September, up 19% on year. Sales in this segment in the September quarter grew 12% from the year-ago quarter to 94,681 units. "Q2 FY26 was a mixed quarter for the commercial vehicles industry, start marked by subdued market conditions and ending with a promising resurgence in demand," Tata Motors' Executive Director Girish Wagh said in a statement.
Commercial vehicle sales were under pressure due to the monsoon in July, while sales in August saw customers being cautious about bookings, waiting for implementation of the new GST rates applicable from Sept. 22. However, sales recovered in late September, Wagh said.
Tata Motors sold 33,148 commercial vehicles in India in September, up 16%. In the September quarter, sales in India grew 9% to 87,061 units. "Following the GST reduction announcement, we acted swiftly and decisively to capture the growth in demand— by enhancing product availability, sharpening our pricing strategy, and intensifying market activations," Wagh said. Buoyed by these initiatives, September became the company's best month in terms of sales in this financial year.
In September, sales of heavy trucks grew 6% on year to 9,870 units and despatches of intermediate, light, and medium trucks grew a faster 13% on year to 6,066 units. Despatches of passenger carriers remained unchanged on year at 3,102 units but sales of small cargo and pick-up vehicles rose 30% to 14,110 units.
"Looking ahead, with the festive season underway, improving consumption, and the full impact of GST reforms yet to unfold, we anticipate a strong second half for FY26. Construction, infrastructure, and mining activities will gain momentum, further fuelling demand for trucks and tippers," Wagh said. "With a robust pipeline of upcoming launches, and a richer, more customer-aligned product portfolio, we are well positioned to accelerate this momentum and drive meaningful, broad-based growth across all commercial vehicles segments."
Tata Motors had reported a consolidated net profit of INR 39.24 billion for the June quarter on revenue of INR 1.044 trillion. On Wednesday, its shares closed 5.6% higher on the National Stock Exchange at INR 718.35. End
