--Cabinet OKs INR 114.4 bln to increase pulses production in India

NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet approved INR 114.40 billion to boost production of pulses and achieve self-sufficiency under Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses, the government said Wednesday. The government will implement the mission for six years starting 2025-26.

The government had announced the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses in the Budget for the current financial year. "The mission will adopt a comprehensive strategy covering research, seed systems, area expansion, procurement, and price stability," the government said in a release.

The mission seeks to expand the area under pulses by an additional 3.5 million hectares by targeting rice fallow areas and other diversifiable lands, supported by promoting intercropping and crop diversification, the government said. For this, the government will also distribute 8.8 million seed kits to farmers for free, the release said.

A major feature of the mission will be assured maximum procurement of tur, urad, and masoor under the government's price support scheme Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan or PM-AASHA. The government has also raised the outlay for PM-AASHA to INR 600 billion from INR 450 billion, Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw mentioned while announcing the Cabinet's decision.

The PM-AASHA scheme is administered to bring in more effectiveness in the implementation of procurement operations to provide remunerative prices to the farmers for their produce and also control the price volatility of essential commodities by ensuring their availability at affordable prices to consumers. Under the scheme, the procurement of the pulses, oilseeds, and copra conforming to the prescribed fair average quality is undertaken by central nodal agencies at minimum support price directly from the pre-registered farmers through the state level agencies.  End
