MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over Odisha and issued a red alert for the region for Thursday. These rains come on the back of a well-marked low pressure area that currently lies over the westcentral Bay of Bengal. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
The well-marked low pressure area is likely to move north-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over the same region during the next 12 hours. Further, it is likely to move in the same direction, intensifying into a deep depression and crossing the south-Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coast during the early hours of Friday, the department said. Under the influence of this weather system, heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected over most parts of east and central India till Sunday.
Another well-marked low pressure area that lies over the Gulf of Kutch and the northeast Arabian Sea is likely to intensify into a depression over the same region during the next 12 hours. Under the influence of this weather system, heavy rainfall is expected over Saurashtra and Kutch till Thursday. A trough runs from the same region and adjoining Saurashtra coast to southwest Uttar Pradesh across east Rajasthan. This is likely to lead to very heavy rainfall over parts of northwest India from Saturday to Tuesday, the department said.
Further, a fresh intense western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from Saturday. Hailstorm activity is expected over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on Sunday and Monday and over parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh on Monday.
The weather department expects very heavy rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya till Friday. These rains come on the back of an upper air cyclonic circulation that currently lies over northeast Assam and another that lies over central Assam and its neighbouring areas, the department said.
Currently, the line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon continues to pass through Veraval and Bharuch in Gujarat, Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, and Jhansi and Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, the department said. Although the southwest monsoon officially ends on Sept. 30, its withdrawal has stalled currently due to multiple weather systems causing rainfall over central, southern, and eastern India, the department had said Tuesday. The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from India may continue beyond Oct. 12, IMD Director General Mrutyunjaya Mohapatra had said. End
