MUMBAI – The Reserve Bank of India will issue a discussion papers on resuming licencing of new urban co-operative banks shortly, according to the Statement on Developmental and Regulatory policies released by RBI Wednesday. Issuance of fresh licence for urban cooperative banks was paused following weak financial health of the sector since 2004, the RBI said.
Taking in consideration that more than two decades have passed since the issuance was paused, and following the positive developments in the sector, the decision has been taken, the RBI said. The Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee, in a unanimous decision Wednesday, left the policy repo rate unchanged at 5.50%, the central bank's Governor, Sanjay Malhotra said. The committee also retained its 'neutral' policy stance. End
