MUMBAI – A cautious mood prevailed in the domestic equity market Tuesday ahead of the outcome Wednesday of the Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee meeting. Some of the volatility in the market was because of the expiry of the monthly futures and options contracts on the National Stock Exchange, which happened on a Tuesday for the first time. Both benchmark indices ended slightly lower after a choppy session.

The Nifty 50 settled at 24611.10 points, down 23.80 points, or 0.1%. The BSE Sensex closed at 80267.62 points, down 97.32 points, or 0.1%. The Nifty 50 closed lower for the eighth consecutive session. The index moved in a tight range of 144 points through the day. However, the market breadth was slightly positive with nearly 49% of the stocks traded on the NSE closing higher and 48% closing lower. The market's fear gauge, India Volatility Index, fell in the dying moments of the session to close 2.6% lower at 11.0650.

Another negative for the market on the day was the worry of a looming shutdown of the US government and expectations of further rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve. Discussions between President Donald Trump and congressional leaders Monday ended without a deal on short-term funding, which raises the risk of a shutdown when the current funding expires midnight Tuesday.

"If no agreement is reached, a shutdown would begin on Wednesday, potentially delaying the release of key economic data, including the September non-farm payrolls report," Jigar Trivedi, senior research analyst at Reliance Securities, said in a note. Additionally, the fresh US tariffs on heavy trucks, patented drugs, and other items are set to take effect Wednesday.

Kalyan Jewellers rose 1.3?ter ICICI Securities upgraded the stock to "buy" from "add". The brokerage said the correction of over 35% in the Kalyan Jewellers stock over the last one year provides a material margin of safety. The stock was the top gainer in the Nifty 200 in the initial hour of trade. Barring Titan Co., all jewellery stocks closed higher with gold prices hitting record highs.

Shares of Tata Motors closed 1.1% higher and were among the top gainers in the Nifty 50 after the company told analysts that Jaguar Land Rover is set to resume manufacturing in a controlled and phased manner in the coming days after a shutdown triggered by a cyberattack in early September. However, the near-term demand outlook for the company remains challenging. Europe remains weak and China is subdued following the change in luxury tax in the country, while the US remains resilient, Nuvama Institutional Equities said in a report.

Tata Investment Corp. rose 17% to end at a fresh record closing high of INR 10,330.50. The stock was the top gainer in the Nifty 500 and was up for the third consecutive session. The volume of the stock traded Tuesday was more than seven times the one-month average volume. Tata Investment Corp. has announced a stock split in the ratio of 1:10 with Oct. 14 as the record date.

Ola Electric Mobility closed at the 5% upper circuit at INR 56.95, ending a four-session fall. Over the weekend, the government unveiled operational guidelines for availing subsidies for vehicle-charging stations, battery-swapping stations, and battery-charging stations, offering up to 100% subsidy.

Shares of Blue Dart Express rose 2.2?ter the company announced a 9–12% hike in average price of shipments. Monday, the company said the new rates will come into effect Jan. 1 and will vary based on the product to be shipped and the customer's shipping profile.

Seshaasai Technologies fell over 2.7% to INR 411.45 on the NSE after listing at INR 432, an over 2% premium to the issue price of INR 423. Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers rose 7.6% to INR 445.55 after listing at INR 432, a premium of over 4% to the issue price of INR 414.

Jaro Institute of Technology Management and Research fell 16% to INR 744.25 on the NSE after listing at its issue price of INR 890. Solarworld Energy Solutions fell nearly 8% to INR 323.50 after listing at INR 388.50, a premium of nearly 11% to its issue price of INR 351.

In the new-look Nifty 50, Max Healthcare Institute ended the day's session on a positive note, up 0.2%, while InterGlobe Aviation fell 2% to be the worst-hit in the 50-stock index. Both stocks were trading for the first time as constituents of the benchmark index.
