MUMBAI – India received 937.2 millimetres of rainfall during the current southwest monsoon, which is 8% above the normal of 868.6 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. This is also higher than the weather bureau's long-range forecast of 6% above normal for Jun-Sept, given on May 27.
Three of the four homogeneous regions in the country received above-normal showers during Jun-Sept while one recorded below-normal showers. Rainfall over northwest India was 27% above normal at 747.9 millimetres. Central India received showers of 1,125.3 millimetres, 15% above normal.
During Jun-Sept, southern India recorded 10% above-normal showers of 787.4 millimetres, the data showed. However, rainfall was 20% below normal at 1,089.9 millimetres over east and northeast India. Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large excess" in two, "excess" in 12, "normal" in 19, and "deficient" in three during Jun-Sept.
On Tuesday, the last day of the southwest monsoon season, the country recorded 44% below-normal showers at 2.0 millimetres. Although the southwest monsoon officially ends Sept. 30, the withdrawal of the monsoon from the country this year is expected to be delayed.
The withdrawal of the monsoon is likely to be stalled for at least 10 days as many parts of the country are expected to continue recording incessant rainfall, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. The withdrawal of the monsoon usually starts around Sept. 17, and it withdraws from the entire country around Oct. 15. End
