MUMBAI – The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon is likely to stall for at least 10 days as many parts of the country are expected to continue recording incessant rainfall for the next few days, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. These rains come on the back of multiple weather systems currently forming over the country, the agency said.
The progression of the monsoon withdrawal usually depends on the fulfilment of certain criteria, which include the absence of rainfall over the given region for at least a few consecutive days. Currently, the line of monsoon withdrawal passes through Veraval and Bharuch in Gujarat, Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, and Jhansi and Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh.
A low pressure area currently lying over the Gulf of Kutch and Saurashtra region is likely to remain over the area for the next three days, the agency reported. Thereafter, it is likely to move to northeast Arabian Sea, where it may become a well-marked low pressure area or even intensify into a depression. Additionally, an upper air cyclonic circulation over the north Anadaman Sea and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal is likely to lead to the formation of a low pressure area over the same region.
These weather systems will cover most parts of the country, prolonging the spread and intensity of rainfall over the country, the agency said. Staggered rainfall is likely over parts of West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, and Mumbai over the next one week, the agency reported.
A few spells of rainfall are also likely over the northern plains this week and areas from where the monsoon has withdrawn completely, the agency said. The presence of easterly winds, a rise in humidity, and the appearance of sheet clouds indicate the continuation of a wet spell over these regions without a confirmed date for its cessation, the agency said.
