NEW DELHI – An Indian delegation led by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met officials in the US earlier this week, where the two sides discussed the bilateral trade agreement. Both the sides decided to continue engagements for the "early conclusion of a mutually beneficial Trade Agreement", the commerce ministry said Friday.

The Indian delegation met US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer and US Ambassador-designate to India Sergio Gor Mon-Wed. The commerce ministry did not mention if Goyal or the Indian team met US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

After five rounds of negotiations between March and July, the trade talks were paused last month following disagreement over the farm sector with the White House cancelling a team's visit to New Delhi scheduled for Aug. 25. The US has also imposed a 50% tariff on imports from India, including a 25% punitive tariff for New Delhi buying crude oil from Russia.

"The delegation had constructive meetings with the US Government on various aspects of the deal," the commerce ministry said in a release. "Both sides exchanged views on possible contours of the deal and it was decided to continue the engagements with a view to achieve early conclusion of a mutually beneficial Trade Agreement."

While initiating the Bilateral Trade Agreement in February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump had agreed to conclude a tranche of the deal by the fall of 2025. Goyal earlier this month said the two sides were moving towards concluding the first tranche of the trade deal by November.

The Indian delegation also met key US-based businesses and investors to promote trade and investment between India and the US. "The meetings with businesses and investors evoked positive response. The business leaders reposed confidence in the India growth story and expressed their desire to intensify their business activities in India," the ministry said.  End
