NEW DELHI – The government has estimated sugar production for sugar season 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) around 34 million tonnes, a senior government official said. This, the official said, is a conservative estimate based on the first round of discussions with states held on Wednesday and may be revised slightly upwards once the sugar crushing begins.

The Indian Sugar Mills & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association has, however, estimated the country's gross sugar production at 34.9 million tonnes for the same period. The industry body not only gave this number once but retained its estimate after a reassessment of the crop based on the progress of the monsoon, water availability, and other related factors for all the sugar-producing states. The association had released its preliminary estimate on sugar output on Jul. 31 based on pan-India satellite imagery and field reports.

"The government has to be cautious with its estimates. The numbers given by Uttar Pradesh are generally right. However, Maharashtra has said it will revise its estimates upwards. For Karnataka, the industry has raised issues saying the government's estimates are too conservative and so they may be revised upwards as well," the official said. Such numbers, however, may change depending on how the crushing season progresses, the official added.

In Maharashtra and Karnataka, favourable monsoon conditions and abundant August rainfall in key regions ensured healthy crop growth and normal development, ISMA had said in a release with its second estimate. With a positive outlook for the remainder of the southwest monsoon and the upcoming northeast monsoon, coupled with higher reservoir levels than last year, expectation of a strong crop has strengthened further, it had said.

In Uttar Pradesh, crop conditions are significantly better than last year owing to mill-level cane development initiatives and timely varietal improvements, the association said. Improved yields and higher recovery rates are expected this season due to a lower incidence of diseases in crops, it had said. ISMA said it will reassess crop conditions in October and release its third estimate in Oct-Nov.  End
