NEW DELHI – The government is working to scale up production of green hydrogen, reduce costs, enable exports, and establish India as a trusted global hub for the emerging renewable energy commodity, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said Thursday. "Hydrogen is not just a fuel of the future, but a pillar of energy security, economic competitiveness, and environmental stewardship," Puri said at the World Hydrogen India Summit on Thursday.

India has set a target to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. To that end, the Centre has promulgated the production-linked incentive scheme with an outlay of INR 197 billion. "I personally feel it is a conservative target," Puri said. "I think we have more or less demonstrated a capacity to meet targets when there is political will and ecosystem," he added.

Indian public sector companies in the oil and gas sector have been at the forefront of India's hydrogen drive, collectively announcing plans to set up green hydrogen capacity totalling 1 million tonnes per annum by 2030. The Centre is also running pilot projects in various sectors, such as transport, for using green hydrogen.

As part of a pilot project, approximately 37 buses and trucks are currently using green hydrogen at nine refuelling stations across various routes in India under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. "This is a significant stride towards becoming a global leader in green hydrogen and aiming to capture 10% of the global market by 2039," Puri said.

The minister said India has established a renewable base that can anchor hydrogen production at scale. For instance, solar energy capacity has increased from 2.6 gigawatts nearly 15 years ago to over 124 gigawatts. Puri expects around 30% of the demand for green hydrogen to come from sectors such as transportation and bioregeneration by 2030.   End
