MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra for Saturday and Sunday. Most parts of western India are likely to experience very heavy rainfall from Saturday to Monday, the weather department said. These rains come on the back of a low-pressure area, which is likely to form over northern and central Bay of Bengal in the next 12 hours. The low pressure area is likely to move towards the west and intensify into a depression, off the coasts of southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh on Friday, the weather department said.
A trough also runs from the southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh coasts to southern Maharashtra coasts across Telangana and north interior Karnataka, the department said. This weather system is also likely to cause intense rainfall over most parts of western India, it said. The department has issued an orange alert for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra from Saturday to Monday, and for Marathwada on Saturday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and goes up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours.
Under the influence of the same weather systems, parts of eastern and central India are also likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall till Tuesday. In eastern India, Odisha is expected to experience very heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday and the weather department has issued an orange alert for the same. Thunderstorms and gusty winds with speeds reaching up to 30–50 kilometres per hour are very likely over Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, and Odisha till Sunday, the department said.
Conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to withdraw further from the rest of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and some more parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand during the next two days, the department said. End
