NEW DELHI – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs Wednesday approved INR 60 billion for highway and railway projects in Bihar ahead of state assembly elections scheduled later this year. The Cabinet approved INR 38.22 billion for construction of the four-lane Sahebganj-Areraj-Bettiah section of National Highway-139W, and INR 21.92 billion for doubling of the Bakhtiyarpur–Rajgir–Tilaiya single railway line section.
The government will develop the 78.94-kilometre greenfield highway project on the hybrid annuity mode, it said in a release. The four-lane project will reduce the travel time between Sahebganj and Bettiah to one hour from 2.5 hours. It is also expected to generate close to 1.42 million man-days of direct employment and 1.77 million man-days of indirect employment, as per the release.
The railway project will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by 104 kilometres. This capacity addition will lead to additional freight traffic of 26 million tonnes per annum, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a press conference while announcing the Cabinet decisions. It is also expected to enhance connectivity to major cultural heriage destinations of Rajgir, Nalanda, Pawapuri, and Bodh Gaya. End
