--Cabinet OKs INR 150.34 bln for expanding medical education

NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet Wednesday approved INR 150.34 billion for a period of four years to strengthen and upgrade government-run medical colleges and hospitals in India. The government will use the funds under two centrally sponsored schemes aimed at augmenting seats in government medical colleges across states.

Under the programme, the government has committed to increase 5,023 seats for Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and 5,000 postgraduate seats at medical colleges. Of the INR 150.34 billion, the Centre will contribute INR 103.03 billion and states' share is INR 47.31 billion, the government said in a press release.

The move will help augment the availability of doctors and specialists in the country, thereby improving access to quality healthcare, especially in underserved areas, the release said. "It will also leverage existing infrastructure for cost-effective expansion of tertiary healthcare in government institutions as expansion of postgraduate seats ensures a steady supply of specialists in critical disciplines," it said.  End
