MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rainfall over most parts of east and central India until Tuesday under the influence of a low-pressure area that is likely to form over the north and central Bay of Bengal on Thursday. The low-pressure is likely to intensify into a depression off the coasts of south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh on Friday, the weather department said.

This weather system is likely to cause thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kilometres per hour over many parts of east and central India, including sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Vidarbha, and Bihar, until Tuesday, the department said. Heavy rainfall is likely to continue until Thursday over parts of Chhattisgarh, until Saturday over Odisha, and on Wednesday over Vidarbha, according to the weather department.

It has also predicted heavy rainfall over most parts of western India until Tuesday, under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation currently located over parts of central Maharashtra. The weather bureau expects very heavy rainfall in parts of central Maharashtra, Konkan, Goa and Marathawada from Friday to Tuesday.

In south India, very heavy rains are likely over parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Friday and Saturday, the department said. Moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, is expected in many parts of southern India, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, until Tuesday, the department added.

The southwest monsoon has withdrawn completely from Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, as well as from some additional parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan. It also withdrew from certain parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, the department said.

Conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to withdraw from the remaining parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and some parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand over the next two to three days, the department said. End
