MUMBAI – The recent reduction in goods and services tax has led to unprecedented walk-ins, surge in enquiries, and record deliveries across most automobile segments in just the first two days, Shailesh Chandra, president of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, said in a statement Tuesday. Chandra said the start of the festival season has been "extremely encouraging".
GST on entry-level two-wheelers and small cars was reduced to 18% from 28%. GST on tractors was reduced to 5% from 18%. The changes came into effect Monday.
"Given the exceptional demand, customers considering a new vehicle should book early to ensure timely delivery," Chandra, who is also the managing director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., said. "We are hopeful that this celebratory momentum will continue." End
