NEW DELHI – The finance ministry is set to move to Kartavya Bhavan – 01 from North Block this week, starting with officials from the Department of Economic Affairs, Department of Revenue, and Department of Expenditure, according to government officials aware of the matter. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will move to her new office in the Central Vista complex in October, the officials said.

The finance ministry has been allocated the ground floor, fourth floor, fifth floor, and the sixth floor of Kartavya Bhavan – 01, the officials said. Other departments of the finance ministry -- Department of Financial Services, Department of Investment and Public Asset Management, and Department of Public Enterprises -- are also likely to move to the Central Vista complex in the next 2–3 months, the officials said. These departments currently have their offices outside North Block, in buildings scattered across New Delhi.

With this, the Union Budget for 2026–27 (Apr-Mar) will be prepared and printed in the Central Vista complex. In fact, government officials are also likely to hold the customary meeting to finalise the borrowing calendar for Oct-Mar at Kartavya Bhavan – 01.

Once all the officials from North Block move to the new complex, the government will turn the British-era building into a museum. The red-sandstone building, inaugurated in 1921, was built by British architect Herbert Baker.

The government has envisioned 10 Kartavya Bhavan or Common Central Secretariat under the Central Vista Redevelopment Project, to bring all its ministries and departments within the same complex spanning an area of around 150,000 square meters. Like the finance ministry that worked out of North Block, several other key ministries function from ageing buildings like Shastri Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan, and Nirman Bhawan, constructed between the 1950s and 1970s, which are now structurally outdated and inefficient.

In August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated Kartavya Bhavan – 03 in the Central Vista complex, which now houses offices of the Ministries/Departments of Home Affairs, External Affairs, Rural Development, Petroleum & Natural Gas, and the Principal Scientific Adviser. According to the government, the new facilities at the Central Vista complex will not only help improve inter-ministerial coordination but also reduce repair and maintenance costs for the government.  End
