MUMBAI – Headline indices closed slightly lower after a choppy session Tuesday. The volatility in the market rose in the second half of the session. Investors likely unwound their short positions to adjust ahead of the expiry of the weekly derivative contract of the Nifty 50, technical analysts said.
The Nifty 50 settled at 25169.50 points, down 32.85 points or 0.1%. The BSE Sensex ended at 82102.10 points, down 57.87 points or 0.1%. Heavyweights HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, and Infosys were the major drags on the 50-stock index. Stocks of automobile, metal, and bank and financial services-related companies were the only gainers Tuesday.
The indices fell after opening slightly higher but the Nifty 50 found strong support at 25000 level and rebounded from the intraday low of 25084.65 points. "The upward movement, especially near key support levels around 25100-25150 suggests active buying and the volume spikes confirm institutional participation," said Bhavya Shah, technical research analyst at StoxBox.
Most banking and financial services rose Tuesday after taking a breather Monday. These stocks had rallied for many sessions after the GST Council on Sept. 3 revamped the goods and services tax for multiple products and sectors. The rationalisation of GST is expected to boost automobile and consumption loans from the December quarter, analysts had said. The top three gainers in the Nifty 50 were IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, and Bajaj Finance, rising 2–3%. Nifty PSU Bank was the biggest gaining sectoral index.
Auto stocks led gains for most of the session after media reports said dealerships saw a surge in footfall, with several companies seeing a notable rise in enquiries on the first day of the cut in goods and services tax. Vehicle deliveries planned on Monday at dealerships across Delhi, Gurugram, and Mumbai were three-five times higher than normal.
The Nifty Auto index closed 0.6% higher. Uno Minda Tuesday said its aftermarket division will cut the prices of auto parts to pass on the full benefit of the new goods and services tax rates effective Monday. The stock closed 0.3% higher. Shares of JBM Auto reversed gains and ended the session 0.5% lower. The stock had risen to an over six-month high of INR 790 after the company launched electric bus services in the United Arab Emirates.
JSW Steel and Jindal Steel were among the top gainers in the Nifty 50 and Nifty 200 indices, respectively, and closed 2% and 3% higher. Nomura Global Markets Research gave a bullish outlook on the Indian steel sector as it expects China's 'anti-involution' campaign to aid Indian companies. This is despite a fall in steel prices and heavy rains. China's 'anti-involution' campaign is to curb excess capacity and price wars in energy and solar supply chains and it has started yielding results.
Most fast-moving consumer goods companies fell for the third consecutive session with the Nifty FMCG declining 1.3%, being the worst performing sectoral index. These stocks witnessed profit booking during these sessions after a rally earlier on the back of reforms in goods and services tax. Trent fell to over five-month low level of INR 4,846, but came off lows and ended 2.4% lower at INR 4,891. It was the worst hit Nifty 50 constituent.
Vodafone Idea was the top gainer in the Nifty 200, ending 4% higher. Investors are waiting for the Supreme Court's hearing scheduled Friday on the company's petition to quash the additional adjusted gross revenue demanded by the Department of Telecommunications.
Gujarat Fluorochemicals closed 0.6% lower but had risen during the session after the Directorate General of Trade Remedies recommended anti-dumping duty on imports of polytetrafluoroethylene from China and Russia. Nuvama Institutional Equities has raised its target price on the stock to INR 5,298 from INR 4,940 and maintained its 'buy' rating after the recent update by DGTR.
Adani Total Gas and Adani Power were the worst hit constituents of the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 each, falling 7% and 4%, respectively. The fall came after two and three sessions of rising. Shares of Euro Pratik Sales closed 0.6% higher after listing at INR 272.10 on the NSE Tuesday, a premium of over 10% from the issue price of INR 247.
