MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rainfall over parts of east and central India till Friday. In the region, Odisha is likely to receive very heavy rainfall till Friday. Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail over parts of Chhattisgarh till Thursday, according to the weather bureau.

Very heavy rainfall in the east and central region is expected under the influence of a low pressure, which currently lies over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining east coasts. The weather bureau has issued an orange alert for Odisha till Friday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeding 115.6 millimetres and going up to 204.4 millimetres is expected within 24 hours. Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail in parts of Chhattisgarh till Thursday, the weather agency said.

In west India, very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra from Friday to Monday, the weather department said. Moderate rainfall coupled with a few spells of heavy showers is expected in Marathawada and other parts of west India during the next seven days.

The weather department has forecast very heavy rainfall over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Fri-Sat. A few spells of heavy rainfall are expected over other parts of south India such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Rayalaseema, and Karnataka till Sunday.

Meanwhile, the conditions are becoming favourable for further withdrawal of southwest monsoon from some more parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab, according to the weather department. Some parts of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir also see favourable conditions for withdrawal of southwest monsoon during the next 24 hours, it added.

The line of withdrawal of southwest monsoon now passes through Tarn Taran and Sangrur districts in Punjab, Jind and Rewari in Haryana, Tonk in Rajasthan, and Mahesana and Porbandar in Gujarat, according to the department.  End
