MUMBAI – The total area under various kharif crops across the country rose 1.4% on year to 111.6 million hectares as of Friday, according to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The area under paddy, maize, pulses, and sugarcane rose on year, while that under oilseeds and cotton fell.
Paddy acreage rose nearly 2% on year to 43.9 million hectares and the area under pulses was up nearly 1% at 11.9 million hectares as of Friday. The area under urad rose nearly 7% to 2.4 million hectares and that under tur was 4.61 million hectares, largely unchanged from 4.63 million hectares a year ago. India kharif moong acreage was 3.47 million hectares, marginally lower than 3.49 million hectares a year ago.
The area under coarse cereals, promoted as 'Shri Anna' by the government, was up nearly 7% at 19.4 million hectares, mainly supported by a rise in the area under maize. The acreage of maize rose about 13% to 9.5 million hectares. The area under jowar was 1.4 million hectares, largely steady on year. The area under bajra was largely steady at 6.84 million hectares.
The acreage of oilseeds fell nearly 3% to 19.0 million hectares, as farmers shifted to maize and paddy for better returns. The area under soybean was down nearly 5% on year at 12.0 million hectares. The area under groundnut rose nearly 1% to 4.8 million hectares.
The area under sugarcane rose over 3% to 5.9 million hectares, while cotton acreage fell nearly 3% to 11.0 million hectares.
