MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha and Chhattisgarh this week. A low pressure area is likely to form over Bay of Bengal on Thursday and cross parts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh coasts, and cause very heavy showers in parts of east-central India during this week, according to IMD.

The department has also issued an orange alert for Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj districts of Odisha on Monday and Sambalpur and Sundargarh districts of the state on Tuesday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeding 115.6 millimetres and going up to 204.4 millimetres is expected within 24 hours. The weather department has advised farmers in Odisha to remove excess water from fields of rice, moong, maize, pigeon pea, finger millet and vegetables and make provision for draining out excess rain water from fields.

Very heavy rainfall is also likely over some parts of Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra from Friday to Sunday, the department said. Other parts of west India such as the Gujarat region and Marathwada are likely to see heavy rainfall Monday, the weather department said.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has withdrawn further from some parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab. Monsoon is expected to withdraw further from some more parts of these states in the next 2–3 days, the weather department said. Further, conditions are becoming favourable for the withdrawal of southwest monsoon from parts of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir during the next 2–3 days, the department added.

The line of withdrawal of southwest monsoon now passes through Tarn Taran and Sangrur districts in Punjab, Jind and Rewari in Haryana, Tonk in Rajasthan, and Mahesana and Porbandar in Gujarat, according to the department.  End
