MUMBAI – India's sugarcane production may reach about 487 million tonnes in 2025–26 (Oct-Sept), up 8% from 450.12 million tonnes last year, the Hindu BusinessLine reported on Friday. This estimate considers the current crop condition after taking the highest yield of 85 tonnes per hectare in the last five years into account and the acreage of 5.731 million hectares, the report said.
"The crop looks very good at present. There is no threat and if some rainfall happens in winter, that will help sugarcane. There is no concern on getting irrigation water as dams are also full," the report quoted B.B. Thombare, president, Western India Sugar Mills Association.
Maharashtra, along with Karnataka, will help the sugar sector amid a drop in area in Uttar Pradesh, the largest sugarcane-producing state, the report said. Maharashtra may produce 13 million tonnes of sugar in 2025-26, including 1.2 million tonnes of expected diversion towards ethanol, the report quoted Thombare as saying. Millers in Uttar Pradesh hope to produce more sugar than the current season's 9.3 million tonnes due to lower chances of pest attack, which damaged the crop last year.
In Karnataka, the state government expects sugarcane production to exceed its target of 63.76 million tonnes due to an increase in the area, the report quoted Thombare as saying. As of Sept. 12, the area under sugarcane has risen nearly 3% to 5.73 million hectares on year, data from the agriculture ministry showed. "When the first estimates will be released next month, there may be a reconciliation of sugarcane acreage and the total area may be lower than what is currently showing," the report quoted an unnamed source as saying.
The Indian Sugar Mills & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association has retained its gross sugar production estimate of 34.9 million tonnes for the 2025-26 sugar season. The industry body retained its estimate after a reassessment of the crop based on the progress of the monsoon, water availability, and other related factors for all the sugar-producing states. End
