India Apr 1-Sept 17 direct tax mop-up INR 10.826 tln, up 9% YOY

NEW DELHI – The government's direct tax collections, net of refunds, during Apr. 1-Sept. 17 rose 9.2% on year to INR 10.826 trillion, the income tax department said late Thursday in a post on X. Net direct tax collections so far account for 43% of the Budget target of INR 25.20 trillion for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar).
On a gross basis, the government collected INR 12.431 trillion, up 3.4% on year. The government has issued refunds worth INR 1.605 trillion this year as of Wednesday, 23.9% lower from a year ago.
Gross corporate tax collections rose 6.5% on year to INR 5.955 trillion and non-corporate tax collections were up 1% on year at INR 6.210 trillion. Non-corporate tax includes taxes paid by individuals, Hindu Undivided Families, firms, associations of persons, bodies of individuals, local authorities, and artificial juridical persons.
The government has projected FY26 total tax collections at INR 42.702 trillion, up 10.8% on year. Of this, it aims to collect INR 25.20 trillion as direct taxes, 12.7% higher than FY25. The government aims to collect INR 780 billion from Securities Transaction Tax in FY26. It has collected Securities Transaction Tax worth INR 263 billion till Wednesday, slightly higher than INR 262 billion in the corresponding period of FY25.
Total advance tax collections this financial year till Sept. 17 were INR 4.490 trillion, up 2.9% from a year ago. These advance tax collections include INR 3.521 trillion of corporation tax and INR 968 billion of non-corporate tax. End
