--IMD: See very heavy rain over parts of Assam, Meghalaya Monday

MUMBAI – Most parts of northeast India are likely to experience a wet start to the Navratri festival with the India Meteorological Department forecasting light to moderate rainfall coupled with a few spells of heavy rainfall over the region till Wednesday. The weather bureau said very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Assam and Meghalaya Monday. The Navratri festival starts Monday and ends Oct. 2.

The rains are on account of an upper air cyclonic circulation that lies over northeast Assam, the weather department said. Under the influence of this weather system, some parts of the seven states in the region--Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland--are likely to witness light to moderate rainfall till Wednesday, it said.

There is another upper air cyclonic circulation that lies over east Bihar, which is likely to cause heavy rainfall over parts of east India, the department said. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar are likely to receive heavy showers till Saturday. Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of east and west Madhya Pradesh till Friday. Parts of east and central India are likely to experience thunderstorms and gusty winds with speeds reaching up to 30-40 km per hour during the next 5-6 days, the meteorological department said.

In south India, a few spells of heavy rainfall are expected over Tamil Nadu till Sunday. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema are also likely to witness strong surface winds during the next five days, the weather department said. This comes on the back of an upper air cyclonic circulation that lies over southern Karnataka. There is also a trough from the south Maharashtra coast to west-central and southwest Bay of Bengal which is causing rainfall over parts of southern India.

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over Marathwada while a trough runs from central parts of south Uttar Pradesh to the same region. Under the influence of these weather systems, light to moderate rainfall with a few spells of heavy rain is likely over Goa till Friday. The weather agency has forecast heavy rainfall over Uttarakhand till Friday. It has issued an orange alert for the state Thursday for very heavy rainfall.

As heavy rain continues to pour over parts of the country, India is likely to see a "wet Navratri", an official from the India Meteorological Department told Informist. Satellite images continue to show moisture, the official added.

According to the weather department, the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon has paused after withdrawing from some parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, and Punjab Tuesday. The line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon currently passes through Bhatinda in Punjab, Fatehabad in Haryana, Pilani and Ajmer in Rajasthan, and Deesa and Bhuj in Gujarat.  End
