MUMBAI – India received 7% above normal rainfall of 43 millimeters in the week ended Wednesday, according to the India Meteorological Department. This is because withdrawal of the southwest monsoon, which started early, has halted. However, the rainfall this week is the lowest since mid-June.

The southwest monsoon's retreat started from parts of Rajasthan on Sunday, three days ahead of its normal date. However, the withdrawal of the monsoon is likely to stall for two weeks due to unfavourable weather conditions, Informist exclusively reported quoting a senior official at IMD.

Among the four homogeneous regions, northwest India received the least amount of rainfall in the week to Wednesday at 15.2 millimeters, which was 37% below the normal, with six out of the nine subdivisions receiving 'large deficient' showers, IMD said. In parts of Rajasthan, rainfall was almost negligible and in Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, rainfall was significantly below the normal, according to the weather department.

Other three homogeneous regions received above normal showers. In east and northeast India, rainfall was 25% above normal at 88.3 millimeters, and in five out of the seven subdivisions in the region, rainfall could be categorised as 'large excess' to 'excess'. Only Arunachal Pradesh received 24% below normal or 'deficient' rainfall, the department said.

The south peninsula received 24% above normal rainfall during the week, IMD said. Central India received 7% below normal rainfall at 44.9 millimetres, where rainfall was 182% and 146% 'large excess' in Marathwada and Vidarbha, respectively.

Of the 36 meteorological subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large excess" in nine during the week. Six subdivisions recorded "excess" rains, five recorded "normal" showers, five received "deficient" and 11 subdivisions received "large deficient" rainfall. Since Jun. 1, the country has received 869.1 millimetres of rainfall, 8% above the normal of 806.8 millimetres, as per the data.
