India crude import bill falls for 5th straight month Aug; falls 17% Apr-Aug

MUMBAI – India's crude oil import bill for the first five months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) fell nearly 17% on year to $50.4 billion, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said in a report. In volume terms, the country's crude oil imports were at 101.1 million tonnes in Apr-Aug, down from 101.9 million tonnes from the corresponding period a year ago, the report said.
In August, the country's crude oil import bill declined over 15% on year to $9.9 billion, the report said. This was the fifth consecutive month of decline in crude import bill since the start of FY26. Crude oil imports in volume terms slipped nearly 3% on year to 19.6 million tonnes last month. India is the world's third-largest importer of crude oil, after China and the US.
The country's dependency on crude oil imports during Apr-Aug rose to 88.4% from 88.0% in the corresponding period a year ago. Domestic crude oil production fell nearly 2% on year to 11.9 million tonnes during the period and consumption of petroleum products were at 99.7 million tonnes unchanged from the previous year, the data showed. The output of petroleum products in Apr-Aug, on other hand, rose by a marginal 0.3% to 117.6 million tonnes from 117.2 million tonnes.
In Apr-Aug, gross total petroleum imports, including crude oil and petroleum products, fell 1% on year to 121.8 million tonnes. The value of gross total petroleum imports fell 15% on year to $59.9 billion, the data showed. India's exports of petroleum products rose 2% on year at 25.7 million tonnes during the period. However, the value of exports declined 13% on year to $15.8 billion during Apr-Aug. End
